Green Schools
Adamstown ETNS
Station Road
Adamstown
Co. Dublin
Dear Martha and the Green Schools Committee,
Thank you for your application for the Green Flag Award. I have reviewed your application and I am extremely impressed with the work going on in Adamstown ETNS. As you will be aware, there is a set procedure dealing with applicants for the Green Flag. The procedure is as follows:
1. School sends in initial application
2. An Taisce review the application and make recommendations
3. School implements the recommendations and sends report to An Taisce
4. An Assessor visits the school
5. ‘Green-Schools’ Evaluation Committee makes a decision to award the Green Flag.
Enough with the formality! Firstly, I would like to complement you on the standard of presentation of your application. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your ‘Green-Schools’ application and you seem to be well on your way to receiving the Green-Flag. It is clearly evident that a lot of hard work is being put into your ‘Green-Schools’ programme.
The structure of your committee looks very good, with strong representation from all parts of the school community. Having as many teachers as possible and parents involved is great for the programme. Thank you for sending in a copy of the minutes of your meetings. The issues mentioned give a good insight in the work your school have been doing.
In addition, your Environmental Review looks like it was very detailed and comprehensive, giving a good indication of the initial situation concerning litter and waste in the school. Your Action Plan was also well put together, taking account of the strong need for recycling in your school. It is in table format as required and clearly details the goals your committee set out. The targets you set out were ambitious. There seems to be a concerted effort to reduce waste and increase recycling by both pupils and staff.
As regards monitoring the levels of litter and waste in the school, your committee has done very well. The graphs that you have created and enclosed are excellent visual representations of the work being done in the school, and clearly show huge progress has been made. An increase in recycling and a reduction of 50% in waste going to landfill so far is really excellent, keep up the good work!
A lot of attention also seems to have been paid to Informing and Involving in the school. The GS notice board, GS newsletter, and website are of course great ways to do this. Furthermore your Day of Action clean-up shows your dedication and hard work on the GS programme.
Overall, a huge amount of work seems to have been done in your school. It is clear that the whole school is involved in the programme to some degree. All other aspects (curriculum work and green code) of your Green-Schools application are excellent.
We would hope to arrange an assessment visit with you shortly, and we will be in touch to organise a suitable day. If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to contact the Green-Schools team on 01-4002222 or by e-mail on: greenschool@antaisce.org Otherwise you can e-mail me directly on: asheridan@eeu.antaisce.org

Alison Sheridan

MEDICAL MATTERS – If your child is feeling unwell, (maybe he/she has vomited during the night or has a high fever), please do not send them him/her to school.
A member of the school community has been in contact with Rubella (German Measles). Should you be an expectant mother who has not been inoculated, please be aware that while Rubella is not prevalent, there are still incidences of this. You can never be too careful.
FESTIVAL OF LIGHT – The Festival of Light will be held on the 8th of December. The drumming band and classes are busily preparing for what is hoped will become an annual event. The Parents’ Association have a number of activities planned for the night. Please mark this in your diary and support this event.
GREEN SCHOOLS – We expect to have a Green schools inspection shortly. Please, please ensure that your child has a proper tuber ware lunchbox. Also it would be helpful if you could wrap his/her sandwich in tissue paper rather than tinfoil etc, as the tissue may be composted. Likewise please ensure your child has a proper reusable bottle or container for his/her drink.
CROSS COUNTRY – In conjunction with St. John the Evangelist School we are organising a cross country meeting on the 2nd December. All the primary schools in Lucan have been invited. We will shortly pick teams for this event.
HEAD LICE – is a regular occurrence in schools. Please continue to check for any signs and do report it to the school if you spot anything.

Astronomy Ireland gave all the classes a lively and interactive presentation about our Solar system. There will also be a space based table quiz for 1sr-6th class on Friday afternoon which we’re sure will be fun! Special thanks to Joanna for all her work on this.
FAI – This morning the FAI have organised a football blitz for our 3rd and 4th classes. Newsletter 23/03/10
Comenius: Welcome to Maja who will be with us, through the Comenius Programme, for the next few months. Maja is a teacher from Slovenia and she has a particular interest in special education. We also had a visit from a number of teachers representing a number of schools in Wales, Finland and Blanchardstown. This programme is a European funded programme which aims to foster a better understanding of the education systems and enhance integration within the European Union. We are fortunate to be a part of that programme. Thank you to Lara for organising this.
Ceili Night : This was, I believe, another great success. It was great to see so many families there on the night. I would like to especially thank all the teachers who did so much to make this night such a memorable one. Special thanks to Martin (St. John’s), Deirdre (Esker ETNS) and Dearmuid (ACETNS) for providing the music on the night.
Book Fair/Week: A great success! Between Esker ETNS and ourselves we raised approximately 1000euro towards the purchase of books for our class library. Thank you to all our families who supported our school by buying books at this fair.
Community Games: basketball training for the community games will take place in St. Johns on the 27th of April at 12pm, ages 8-16.
Cricket: Cricket is starting again in the school on Thursday the April 15th with 3rd & 4th classes at Adamstown Castle ETNS. This is run by the Leinster Cricket Union in conjunction with the Adamstown Cricket Club.
Archive: If you are like me and tend to take photos and never print them then I would ask you to check your hard drives and memory cards for any stills or movies you have of the school, copy them and send them in to us. It is our wish to build up an archive of this material before it will be lost to us. Some of this we would hope to put up on the web more of it is to put on a digital loop for display around the school. Please send in what you wish to Deirdre or to our email address: acetns@gmail.com
Green Flag: We are awaiting confirmation of our green flag inspections. To date the green flag committee has been very active in the school evaluating the progress of our classes in their attempts to: reduce, reuse and recycle. This has an added benefit to the school community as it reduces our waste costs. Next we will be concentrating on the reduction of our water consumption which will shortly cost us approximately 500 euro a month at our present rate of consumption. Similarly, we will be working at reducing our electricity consumption which is running at approximately 700euro a month. I would like to thank Martha for all her work with this group.
Student Council: Our student council has been a very active group within our school community. They have done much over the last few months to resolve issues and disputes which occur regularly, as in all schools, in the yard. I would like to thank Grainne for all her work with this group.
Second Level Educate Together: The Department of Education and Science is considering the option of having the first Educate Together Second Level School in Lucan. This is a great development for our sector and we wish those involved, in particu
Lost & Found: All lost items which have been left in the school the past few months will be displayed on the stage in the hall from this afternoon. Please feel free to come along and go through these items.
Family Learning Initiative: The Family Learning Initiative which is funded by the VEC and run by the LIFE Centre in Lucan. This course will help your children with their learning. Further information will be available in the coming weeks.

Adamstown Castle Educate Together – 11th March 2010 Newsletter
Please check our blog (updated every Thursday) & website for further updates www.acetns.ie
St. Patricks Day: The School will be closed on the 17th of March for our national holiday (St. Patrick’s Day). We are looking forward to an exciting week with our parade around ADAMSTOWN Cheili night in the hall etc. Please check the note sent to you earlier this week or check the blog.
Swine Flu Vaccination: The HSE has visited the school and the vaccination has been completed. If you did not have your child vaccinated and still wish to do so you can do it at the local health clinic or go to your local GP and put your child’s name down. This service is free of charge but you will need to have your child’s pps number.
More Medical Matters: This is a letter I received from the DES recently:
Recommended Action:
Please communicate with the parents and staff that:
a. A national measles outbreak is occurring
b. Non-immune children /staff are at risk of measles themselves
c. Non-immune children/staff put others in the school at risk
d. All children are recommended to have two doses of MMR vaccine and parents should ensure their child’s vaccinations are up to date.
What is measles?
Measles is a highly infectious serious disease characterised by high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes (conjunctivitis) and a generalised red rash that starts on head and moves down the body.
Anyone with measles is infectious from 4 days before to 4 days after rash onset.
Direct contact with a case is not needed for measles transmission to occur – airborne transmission of the virus (from coughing and sneezing) makes measles one of the most infectious viruses known to man.
Approximately 30% of measles cases have been hospitalised in this outbreak, and two children have required intensive care treatment. Fortunately there have been no deaths reported so far.
How can measles be prevented?
Vaccination with MMR vaccine is the only way to protect against measles
The first MMR dose should be given at 12 months of age, and the second dose at 4‐5 years of age. Unless medically contraindicated, all children 6 years and older should have already received two doses of MMR vaccine.
All staff born since 1978 who are not immune (either as a result of previous infection or vaccination) are at risk of measles during this outbreak.
If staff become infected they could infect children in the school, fellow staff or their own family.
Please check our blog (updated every Thursday) & website for further updates www.acetns.ie

• Thank you to Vitalie and Tina, parents of Torsten from Martha’s class for their kind donation of books to the school. If you wish to donate age appropriate books to the school, we would be delighted to hear from you.
• Unlike most schools in the area, we have been very fortunate in that we have suffered no vandalism whatsoever over the past two years. Unfortunately, we had a large window broken recently. I would ask parents to text me should you see any groups on the school grounds outside of school hours on 087-9687142.
• Thank you to Sarah & Fabrice. Sarah as you may not be aware is our very competent and meticulous treasurer on the BOM. Since we opened, Sarah has been looking after our finances and our billing. Sarah & Fabrice designed a superb system for the running of the school which she sells to other schools for the nominal sum of €100. All proceeds from this have been donated to our school to enable us to purchase a Sra Reading laboratory and reading materials for the school. Thanks Sarah & Fabrice!

Emergency Closure
Dear All,
Happy New Year!! Due to very bad weather conditions, the rest of the schools in Lucan have decided to keep closed until Monday. So Tom and myself felt that it would be better to keep our school closed till Monday as well due to safety reasons. We will monitor the situation over the weekend and hopefully the weather gets better for Monday!! As per Department circular, we have to compensate for the school closure days!! Best Regards
